Casa Uvero is located on the area of the southern Yucatan coast known as the Costa Maya. It is 10 km south of Mahaual (sometimes called Majahual). The nearest major airport is in Cancun, 213 miles away. It is about a five hour drive away. Although there is daily bus service from Cancun to Mahahual, we recommend renting a car for convenience.
Mahahual provides basic grocery shopping, restaurants, dive shops and other excursions. A new malecon was built for walking along the beach in downtown. The beachside restaurants offer fresh fish and beverages next to the beautiful, blue lagoon, which is great for swimming and snorkeling.
It was a sleepy little fishing village until the cruise ships discovered it in 2000. In August 2007, Hurricane Dean, a category five hurricane, hit the town head-on and devastated the community, destroying the cruise ship dock and the town’s economy. The people have been working very hard since then to rebuild their homes, businesses, and community. The locals are preparing to welcome the cruise ships and their customers to their businesses again in the fall 2008.
“New Mahahual” is the section of town on the north side of the highway. This is where you will find grocery stores for basic supplies, more restuarants, the internet café, gym, bakery and laundry.
