Casa Uvero is completely tiled with spacious, arched balconies and porches, and the rooftop terrace offers panoramic Caribbean views from your hammocks. The beach is 200 feet from the house. The main living space is on the second floor bringing partial ocean views and continuous tropical breezes. Each bedroom has its own full bathroom and separate entrance, making it perfect for three couples to share. All rooms have air-conditioning (when the generator is on), ceiling fans, and screened doors and windows.
The main living space includes a living room, kitchen, small library corner, large covered porch, master bedroom, and access to the rooftop terrace. The kitchen is fully equipped with service for eight. Includes a full-size refrigerator with freezer, stove and oven. The kitchen includes plenty of utensils, knives and pans for most cooking projects. Two French presses and a coffee grinder are available to make coffee. The island counter and the dining table on the outdoor patio both have seating for six. Two more spacious bedrooms are on the lower level, sharing a wide, covered patio.
The house is in a small walled community and the homeowner’s association provides security. Two bicycles are available at the house that can be used for biking along the beach road. Includes wireless internet.
Uvero Plant |
We named the house Casa Uvero after the sea grape tree, which grows extensively on the property. Uvero, uva de mar or sea grape is the common name for the Coccoloba uvifera. The sea grape is a durable plant, capable of surviving in dry and salty environments. The fruit is used to make wine and jellies.
The house is “off-the-grid” meaning it is not connected to electric lines or a public water system. Electricity comes from solar panels and a generator. The air conditioning is only available when the generator is on which will be about three hours a day. We ask that all guests conserve electricity, and the system cannot support any heat-producing appliances (coffee-maker, hair dryer, microwave). The water source is rainwater in the underground cistern, and water-use should be mindful of conservation. Bottled water on a stand is available for drinking.

The owners, John Schaeffer and Patti Bailey, discovered Mahahual and its pristine diving sites in 2006 when they volunteered for five weeks with Global Visions International (GVI). They spent five weeks diving with GVI at its Costa Maya Station, doing reef surveys of the fish and coral that would be used for conservation work with Amigos Sian Ka’an and Universidad de Quintana Roo. Read more about the GIS services we provided for the Costa Maya Station of Global Vision International.
Diving, Fishing & Snorkeling: The offshore reef system is part of the Mesoamerican reef that runs from Mexico to Honduras, the second largest reef system in the world. This makes for spectacular scuba diving, snorkeling and fishing. We enjoy diving with Dreamtime Diving, located just 6 km from Casa Uvero. To find out more about the diving go to www.dreamtimediving.com. A special diving excursion is to book a trip to Chinchorro banks, a large atoll just off shore.
Mayan ruins: The pyramids of Chaccoben, Kohunlich and Dzibanche are located nearby.
Lake Bacalar: A large freshwater lagoon of “seven colors” is great for swimming and kayaking.
Chetumal: The capital of the state of Quintana Roo where you can shop and visit the Museum of Mayan Culture.
